  • Oh! waking is a bitter nightmare..when you constantly hang around the fringes of my dreams..

..my foundation is crumbling and shattered glass is falling all over sidewalks..

..i am collapsing and i am collapsing on myself.. i am shards of glass..and i am the person being wounded by the glass..

..there is a certain beautiful honesty about depression..

..will Candy and honey not ..sweeten the Bitter acrimony of life? ..if truth indeed be a fallacy, then should reality not be a lie?

Truth is like water. A little of it quenches your thirst Too much of it..and you drown.

    Act Three, Scene Three

Scene: Back in the dark room at the start of the play. THe room is still dirtyisolated, and full of cobwebs. The murky light cast from the windowgive the room a eery feel..almost ghoulish. The room is cast in shadows.it is old, murky...and possibly cursed to remain so.

Dorothy: Did you like the story?

Dorothy: No? okok..i promise you..it gets VERY interesting now.

Dorothy: I promised you a princess, so you ARE getting a princess. You are in fact reading about one now. Who's story is this? Well, mine of course! i create all my own stories. The best are those you write yourself. SO where was i? ..shall i continue?

(strains of music can be heard. "Castle on a Cloud")

Dorothy: Hmmm..Castle on a Cloud. My favourite. When does one go to meet the Castle on the Cloud? When can one go? WHere can one find His castle on a cloud. Is there one? Are there two? SO many questions..so little time..and no answers. SO i must continue with the story, and do away with these redunduncies. ...

Dorothy: Oh yes..Castle on a cloud..now i remember.. there was indeed a castle in the story....a very nice one at that too...

Dorothy: Its a different kind of princess..

Dorothy: You don't like the story? That what kind of story do you want to hear?

    Schoolgirl1 and 2: Happy story!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dorothy: There's no such thing! (laughing) anyway..happy stories are not fun. Stories like these are fun. They are real. You want to hear the real thing anyway don't you?

    Act Three, Scene One

Scene: The scene is in a classroom. It is a normal schoolday, the tables
are arranged neatly around the class. There are stacks of books on the
side cupboard. The Black board is worn out.

    (laughter can be heard)

Miss Ng:(holding an opened textbook) May the deed fit the title. (closes the book)
So class. what did you think? You liked the story?

Schoolgirl1:(Raising hand) Wow. But i didn't really get the ending.
Was she really mad? I mean..it's just so incredible

    Schoolgirl2: Yeah..yeah..really it was. Great story..but unbelievable
I mean..a fruit knife? How can a fruit knife cut through the skin?
    it's just too soap-opera.

Miss Ng: (pauses, then smiles slightly): Oh..You know stories..Not meant to be believable
    ..it's very complicated really.

Schoolgirl1: Is it a true story? i mean it sounds so dramatic..and so
    real.the poor girl..

Miss Ng: It's JUST a story girls! Hope you learnt something though.
Schoolgirl2: It must be REEEAAAALLLy scary being in a hospital..it's so
lonely! And who would want to go mad anyway? Siao leiz..

Miss Ng: Oh you know, Madness is a disease that eats away at your mind..
so you THINK you DECIDE to go mad...in reality..you are already mad.
You just think you have a choice in that matter

    Schoolgirl2: Wah..complex...

Miss Ng: (laughing) Its just a story girls..Here's another one..since
we still have time before the bell rings...

    Act Two, Scene Four

    ..the light comes on again
    Scene changes

Scene: Back to the hospital again. The white washed walls are strangely
illuminated by the lights. It makes the hospital feel cold.)

Dorothy: By the time i woke up..my throat was dry..i must have been screaming for a very long time. ..and then i must
    have passed out.

Dorothy: What did the nurse say? what did the Doctor say? it seems
so unfamiliar to me now...almost like a dream...

Nurse: Doctor Shen..She's unstable. She has been ranting like this..

Doctor Shen: We need to give her the jab now..

Nurse: Oh doctor..she says she is going mad. She say she DECIDED to go mad
..but mad people don't decide do they? if you are mad, you won't even
    know it will you?

Doctor Shen:(grimly) Oh..maybe they do decide

Nurse:..how could anyone decide that they are mad?

Doctor Shen: When they are mad.

Dorothy: I almost choked with laughter. That panic. that tone of seriousness
Did they think i was just trying to shock? i wasn't. I was going mad.
    i mean..i AM going mad. i decided.

Dorothy: We all make choices in life. SO why can't i chose my identity?
why Can't i decide what i want to be? So if i want to be mad, then
    why can't i?

Lionel: It's sad Dorothy. It's sad. You need help. You are sick.

Dorothy: Did i decide i was sick? or was it the people around me?

Lionel: Dorothy..get a life. Life goes on. You live. SO i chose Alice
So she's your best friend. But these things happen. People die.
FLowers fade. the weather changes. Things change. I did. I can't remain
    ..this way all my life.

Dorothy: Oh crude. People Die. FLowers fade. Such ..a realistic description
He could at least have made death a poetic abstraction. Not even a
    fine juxtapostion at all.

Lionel: You held on too tight. Now you got to let go

Dororthy. And i am. I am letting it all go. Letting it all go by
deciding that i am mad. When i am mad. I don't have responsibilites
i let other people do the worrying. And i get away with murder. You are
wrong Lionel. I am letting it all go. Down the drain.

    Lionel: You are sad Dorothy

    Dorothy: Perhaps i am.

Doctor: I am not sure whats wrong with her. Did you say she was hysterical?

Dorothy: I can tell you whats wrong with me.

    Lionel: Dorothy...what's wrong with you?

    Nurse: Doctor..what's wrong with her?

    Alice: Dorothy..What's wrong with you?

Doctor: Dorothy..listen to me ok? You need to talk to me. You are not
PHYSICALLY sick. SO what's wrong with you? What's bothering you.
MADNESS is a DISEASE. You don't decide

Dorothy: What's wrong? i am mad. I am different. Sorry DOc. You were wrong
MADNESS IS not just a disease. It is just another identity. YOU CAN CHOSE.
Like everything in life is an identity right? like everything in life
is so...performative. Nothing but an act. Nothing but a cover. You decide
what you want to be. Then you become that something. EVERYTHING IN LIFE.
SO what is real? I tell you what is real. It's what you DECIDE is real.
So i decide i am mad. So that must be real. That must be true. That must
    be what's wrong.

Nurse: Doctor..we have got a problem...

Dorothy: Ok..so i am Holding this fruit knife now. Rather tacky. And waving it
about. Is that what mad people do?

Nurse: DOCTOR!! HELP! someone! Please! Miss! Put that down! Miss!

Dorothy: What am i to do? I can't help it. I can't control it.

Nurse: HELP PLEASE! Miss! Don't be foolish! PLease Mam! DOCTOR SHEN!( rushes out of the room
Dorothy: It's either me or her. Is this how i must prove my case?
do i have to ACT like i am insane for them to believe? Then God rest my soul..
May they deed fit the title. ( Brings the fruit knife down to her wrist)

Nurse: Oh God! (Screams uncontrollably) Oh help! please!

    Blacks out. Scene closed.

    Act Two, Scene Three

(Back in the same musty room, as the first scene. the floors are dirtythe cobwebs are lying all around. The room is old, empty, isolated.the cracked mirror is still lying on the floor)

Dorothy:(closing the book she had on her lap shut): So you did not like the story?

Dorothy: It's alright. But why? Because it was too complicated? Toocomplex? You didn't understand it? It's alright. The best stories..good stories..don't always have to be understood. As long as one personappreciates it, it's value is still inherent.

Dorothy:(wallking across the stage and picking up the broken mirror, caressing it lovingly)So what kind of story do you want to hear? Of princess? Of Dragons?Or valiant knights? Of witches? Of Wizards who live in Oz? I know a storyi know a princess. But this princess aint no cinderella. This is a pill-poppin..valium snorting..crude shoutin..kind of princess. Ok call her the anti-princess. No one like an anti-princess..

Dorothy: But then that just makes the story more interesting no?

    Act Two, Scene two.

    Scene: Back at the hospital.

Dorothy: Oh..im sorry. I must have fallen asleep..it's the medicine really..giving me a headache.

Dorothy:(spies a piece of paper on the table, and picks it up) But ..look? What's here? A letter..hmm...(opens the letter..and starts to read)

Dorothy: It from Lionel. (reading)..Happy birthday...hope you will like the present..i bet you do...i am so glad to have you in my life...(reads on with a slight frown on her face)

Dorothy: Sometimes the medicine makes you woozy. It makes you see things. And maybe i wish i was seeing things. So what was Lionel's present to me? Nothing save but tears. Somebody please help the deluded soul. Somebody please help me.

    (the nurse enters)

Nurse: Miss, is there anything i can get you?

    Dorothy:..i think i need a doctor...

Nurse: (looking worried) Is anything wrong? What's the matter? Shall i ring for Dr Shen now?

Dorothy:(staring into space)..or maybe some Valium in coffee..or some prozac and coke..

Nurse: Are you ok? Tell me what's the matter?

Dorothy:..Please..im feeling so weak..u don't understand! i need a doctor! i need a doctor! i need a friggin doctor right now! Im not well! i must be healed! i Want a doctor!

Nurse:(looking distressed): Ook ..ok..miss..please calm down! ill ring for doctor Shen right now!

Dorothy:..U don't understand. I need a doctor. I need him to verify my illness?

Nurse:(halfway out of the room, turning back): But what illness?

Dorothy: My mental illness. Last year i decided to be a clown. Last month i decided to be a puppet. Yesterday i decided i was going to be a child. and today..i have decided i want to go mad

    Nurse:...but..but..

Dorothy: I want to go mad. So i am mad. A raving loony. Insane. You better get a doctor. Anyone. you better tie me down. You better restrain me. Mad people can be dangerous. I can be dangerous..

    Nurse:..But..But....

Dorothy: DID YOU HEAR ME? I AM MAD! I WANT A DOCTOR! NOW! NOW! NOW! NOW!(SCREAMS LOUDLY)

The lighting fades away to darkness..and the scream continues
